Tempe, AZ 85005-5810 The text is designed to accompany the first semester undergraduate statistics course. The text is divided into two sections. The first section covers the topic of sampling distributions and uses simulation exercises to get the students acquainted with the concepts. The second section deals with analysis of data and uses statistical methods to interpret results of data analysis. The chapters in the second section are organized into four parts. The first part, Chapter 3-6, covers most of the major statistical methods used in data analysis. The second part covers estimation, hypothesis testing, and sampling distributions. This section provides the students with a high level mathematical background so that they will be ready to use statistical methods. Part 3 covers estimation and modeling. The fourth part of the text has six chapters, each addressing a specific topic in statistics. These are: Chapter 7, Design of Experiments, Chapter 8, Contingency Tables, Chapter 9, Regression and Analysis of Variance, Chapter 10, Analysis of Covariance, and Chapter 11, Analysis of Bivariate Data. In each chapter, the text first discusses the advantages and disadvantages of different statistical methods, before explaining those methods with full detail. A series of statistical examples are then used to practice what is being learned in the chapter. A chapter-by-chapter guide is available for instructors, which can be accessed from the book's website. An index and a glossary of key terms completes the text. Dr. Weiss is Professor of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences at Arizona State University. He has taught statistics for 24 years, is a statistical consultant to the U.S. Air Force, and is the editor-in-chief of the Journal of Quantitative Analysis in Sports (JQAS). Dr. Weiss has published more than 400 articles and book chapters in the area of statistics and probability. He holds a Ph.D. in statistics from UCLA and a B.A. in statistics and mathematics from Purdue University. He is a Fellow of the International Statistical Institute and a member of the National Academy of Sciences. A great number of statistical problems and solutions are included in the text. The problems in the text are often taken directly from real-world applications, making the book particularly relevant for practicing statisticians. Examples are included in statistical exercises, and the solutions are included in the answers. The book will be a tremendous resource for both instructors and students alike. Professor Stein is Research Scientist at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). She is a former mathematics instructor at the University of Kansas
